The Amazon series was announced in July 2019 as an adaptation of Lois Duncan's 1973 novel, with Shay Hatten originally writing the pilot before Sara Goodman replaced him as series writer when it received a straight-to-series order in October 2020.

Neal H. Moritz and James Wan, through their companies Original Film and Atomic Monster, served as executive producers on the series, bringing horror pedigree to the modern take on the franchise.

Madison Iseman was cast in a dual role, playing both twin sisters Allison and Lennon, who have contrasting personalities and a rivalry with each other.

Filming took place on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, beginning on January 25, 2021, under director Craig William Macneill, who helmed the pilot and also served as an executive producer.

A soundtrack album featuring original music by composers Drum & Lace and Ian Hultquist was released by Madison Gate Records on the same day the series premiered, October 15, 2021.

The series premiered with mixed reviews, holding a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 45/100 on Metacritic, with critics praising the cast but criticizing plot holes and unsatisfying twists.

Despite the mixed critical response, the series was canceled by Amazon Prime Video after just one season on January 7, 2022.

Critic Daniel Fienberg noted that unlike the original films, this modern retelling features teenage characters who use Instagram, updating the story's themes for a social media-era audience.
