In November 2018, it was revealed that Netflix was developing an animated miniseries about a Mesoamerican warrior, and in 2019 it was announced that Jorge R. Gutiérrez would write and direct the production.

In October 2018, Gutiérrez described the series as the Mexican equivalent of 'The Lord of the Rings', but funny.

Gutiérrez revealed that one of the scenes was inspired by the films Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Kill Bill, and Ninja Scroll, as well as a 'chola fight' he saw in Tijuana, Mexico.

The creator emphasized that the series is deeply inspired by Mesoamerican art and artifacts from the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico.

The character of Mai was inspired by the mother, wife, and sister of director Jorge Gutiérrez.

The creator suggested that the series would have similarities to his previous works, such as 'El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera' and 'The Book of Life'.

The series was created using Blender, a free open-source 3D animation software.

On October 9, 2021, two episodes of the series closed the Guadalajara Film Festival during a special event.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series received 100% positive reviews based on 14 opinions, with an average rating of 8.60/10.

In May 2022, Netflix cancelled the continuation of the series titled 'Kung-Fu Space Punch', though showrunner Gutiérrez assured that the project 'is not dead, it's just not moving forward at Netflix Animation'. The project was originally presented as a standalone feature film at the Annecy festival in 2017.
