True Story marks Kevin Hart's debut as a lead in a television drama series, having been previously known primarily for comedy.

Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes were announced as the stars of the series on December 9, 2020.

Most of the supporting cast, including Tawny Newsome, Paul Adelstein, Will Catlett, Chris Diamantopoulos, Billy Zane, Lauren London, Ash Santos, and John Ales, joined the project in February 2021, while Theo Rossi was cast a month later.

Chris Hemsworth and Ellen DeGeneres both make cameo appearances in the series playing themselves.
