Filming began on July 26, 2021 at the Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang, China, and wrapped on December 17 of the same year.

In episode 10, a letter written by Old Madame Wan to Xiao Yuanyi used a character that sparked controversy, as the term 'stacked bones bridge' was written with a character meaning 'succession/change' rather than the intended meaning of 'overlapping,' which was inconsistent with the era the fictional setting was meant to evoke, reminiscent of China's Spring and Autumn/Warring States period.

Although presented as a historical costume drama set in a fictional world, the series' time period design draws loosely on China's Eastern Han dynasty.
