Kotoyama gave his work the name Call of the Night, inspired by the eponymous song by the duo Creepy Nuts, which later became the anime's ending theme.

Call of the Night is Kotoyama's second manga, published in the Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine between August 2019 and January 2024, and won the 68th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2023.

The character Lira Echigo, a student who fell in love with Ko at first sight, was cut from the anime, appearing only in the background in some scenes.

The anime was directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, who had previously worked on the Monogatari series at Shaft studio, which led critics to favorably compare Call of the Night to that franchise.

The duo Creepy Nuts composed both the opening 'Daten' and the ending 'Yofukashi no Uta' of the first season, in addition to the insert song 'Loss Time', and returned in the second season with the themes 'Mirage' and 'Nemure'.

As of June 2025, the manga had already exceeded 5.3 million copies in circulation.

The anime was nominated in three categories at the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards: Best New Series, Best Romance, and Best Ending Sequence, and the opening theme of the second season 'Mirage' was nominated for Best Opening Sequence at the 10th edition of the award.

In 2020, the manga was nominated for the sixth Next Manga Award, finishing seventh among 50 nominees with 15,134 votes.
