This series is a television reboot of the 1987 film of the same name, developed by Alexandra Cunningham and Kevin J. Hynes. The project was first announced in February 2021 as part of a wave of Paramount Pictures films being adapted into television series for Paramount+, alongside Flashdance, The Italian Job, Love Story, and The Parallax View.

Lizzy Caplan was cast as Alex Forrest, a role originally portrayed by Glenn Close in the 1987 film, with the casting announced in November 2021 alongside the official series order.

Joshua Jackson was cast in January 2022 as Dan Gallagher, the role originally played by Michael Douglas in the film.

Silver Tree joined the production as director and executive producer in May 2022, with much of the main cast including Amanda Peet, Alyssa Jirrels, Toby Huss, Reno Wilson, and Brian Goodman announced the following month; filming began in mid-2022.

The series had its international premiere at the 2023 Canneseries festival on April 18, 2023, ahead of its Paramount+ release.

The show was cancelled by Paramount+ after just one season, on October 26, 2023.

Critical reception was mixed, with a 37% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 47/100, though some critics like John Anderson of The Wall Street Journal called it a 'first-rate reimagining' that was more complex and adult than the original film.
