Cristóbal Balenciaga

On 12 November 2021, coinciding with its second anniversary, Disney+ announced it would begin producing original series in Spain, with this biographical series about couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga chosen as its first Spanish original.

The series was originally announced simply as 'Balenciaga', but at some point during production the title was changed to 'Cristóbal Balenciaga', a fact only revealed when Disney+ announced the premiere date.

Alberto San Juan was announced in June 2022 as the actor who would portray Cristóbal Balenciaga, with the rest of the cast revealed the following month in July 2022.

By late September 2022, the series was on track to complete filming after four months of shooting across various locations.

Critic María Luis Álvarez Izquierdo praised Alberto Iglesias's score, calling it 'the sonic cherry on top' of the series.

The series won the 2024 Iris Award for Best Original Content for a Platform in the Spanish Market, awarded by the Board of the Academia de Televisión y de las Ciencias y Artes del Audiovisual.

Critic Aglaia Berlutti of Hipertextual gave the series four out of five stars, praising how it avoids a single linear narrative and instead builds the story through the events that marked its protagonist's life.
