The 2007 series is a reboot of Jay Ward and Bill Scott's original 1967 animated television series, which itself was a parody of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan character.

Unlike the 1967 original, which also featured separate segments like Tom Slick and Super Chicken, the 2007 remake episodes consist solely of two 11-minute George of the Jungle segments.

Production on the series began in 2004 with Teletoon involved before Cartoon Network joined the project.

Tiffany Ward re-aged the character of George to be a teenager for this version, and the art style was designed to evoke Cartoon Network series such as The Powerpuff Girls and Samurai Jack.

The series was animated using Flash by Studio B, which was one of the first studios to adopt this animation technique.

All of the show's scripts were written by freelance writers.

The second season, released nine years after the first, brought George's design closer to his original 1967 look and gave him a deeper voice, while Ape gained a British accent matching the original series.

In season 2, the roles of George and Ape were recast, with Cory Doran replacing Lee Tockar as George and Rob Tinkler replacing Paul Dobson as Ape; several other characters were also recast or renamed, such as Dr. Scott becoming Dr. Chicago.
