The series was set in the real boomtown of Tombstone, Arizona Territory, known as "the town too tough to die" and famous as the site of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, but it focused on fictional characters rather than historical figures like Wyatt Earp or Doc Holliday.

Richard Eastham, who played newspaper editor Harris Claibourne and narrated every episode in a deep baritone voice, was originally a singer in opera and on Broadway before joining the show.

Curly Bill Brocius, played by Robert Foulk, was the only real historical Tombstone figure to appear in the series, featured during the first season.

Gerald Mohr played Doc Holliday in the 1958 episode "Doc Holliday in Durango," reprising essentially the same portrayal he had given the previous year as Holliday in the Maverick episode "The Quick and the Dead" alongside James Garner.

The end credits credited the show's production to the cooperation of Clayton A. Smith, editor of the real-life newspaper The Tombstone Epitaph, and historian D'Estell Iszard, tying the fictional series to real historical sources.

Tombstone Territory became a notable early example of a TV network essentially competing with itself, since ABC simultaneously aired this show—whose lead character closely resembled Wyatt Earp in all but name—alongside The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp.

The show was adapted into a comic book, Four Color #1123, published in June 1960 by Dell Comics, illustrated by Dan Spiegle and written by Paul S. Newman.

The series' theme song, "Whistle Me Up a Memory," was written by William M. Backer and performed by Jimmy Blaine.
