Disclaimer is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Renée Knight, adapted for the screen by Alfonso Cuarón who also served as writer, editor, and director of the entire miniseries.

Casting

Cate Blanchett's character Catherine Ravenscroft is played at two different ages, with Leila George portraying a younger version of Catherine during a holiday in Italy twenty years prior to the main storyline.

The cast was assembled gradually starting in December 2021 with Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, followed by Kodi Smit-McPhee in February 2022, Sacha Baron Cohen and HoYeon Jung in March 2022, Louis Partridge in May 2022, Lesley Manville in June 2022, and Leila George in October 2022.

Filming began by June 2022 on location in Archway (London), Tuscany, and Venice, and production wrapped in February 2023.

The story is told using a non-linear structure and an unreliable narrator technique, presenting the events in Italy twice: first from Nancy's speculative point of view, then later from Catherine's own first-person experience.

Disclaimer premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 29, 2024, before also screening at the Toronto International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival ahead of its Apple TV+ debut on October 11, 2024.

Reception

Both Kevin Kline and Cate Blanchett received nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG, Critics Choice, and Satellite Awards for their performances, with Blanchett later also earning an Emmy nomination.
