Grand Crew received a pilot order from NBC on January 23, 2020, with the pilot directed by Mo Marable and written by series creator Phil Augusta Jackson, who was set to executive produce alongside Dan Goor.

Casting

Justin Cunningham, Echo Kellum, and Carl Tart were the first actors cast in March 2020, playing Wyatt Fields, Noah (originally named Noah Koles before becoming Noah Coleman), and Sherm Jones respectively, before Nicole Byer and Aaron Jennings joined the cast.

Grasie Mercedes joined the cast as Fay later than the rest of the main ensemble, with her casting announced on August 17, 2021.
