The series was created by Joanna Johnson, who loosely based the premise on her own life as a former cast member of the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful.

The show was primarily filmed at Silvercup East in New York City, a sister studio to Silvercup Studios.

Megan Fox took over the role of Sydney Shanowski for seasons two and three, after Nicole Paggi played the character in season one.

In the unaired pilot, several roles were cast differently than in the final series: Josh Stamberg played Charlie instead of Ted McGinley, Brie Larson played Sydney instead of Nicole Paggi, Slade Pearce played Justin instead of Paulie Litt, and Harve Presnell played Jack instead of Robert Wagner.

Jansen Panettiere played Justin Shanowski only in the aired pilot episode before being replaced by Paulie Litt.

Real-life married couple Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos both starred in the show, with Consuelos playing recurring character Gary 'The Gooch' Gucharez, Faith's on-and-off love interest.

ABC benched the show for the February 2006 sweeps to make room for an expanded edition of Dancing with the Stars, later airing its remaining episodes against American Idol before cancelling it in May 2006.

The series was adapted into a Turkish version titled Belalı Baldız (Troublesome Sister-in-law), which aired in 2005 on ATV, and a French version titled La star de la famille aired on M6.
