Brooklyn South

Brooklyn South was co-created by Steven Bochco, Bill Clark, David Milch, and William M. Finkelstein, several of whom had previously collaborated on Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, L.A. Law, and Cop Rock.

The series was designed as a companion to NYPD Blue, aiming for the same gritty realism but shifting focus from detectives to uniformed patrol officers of a Brooklyn precinct.

The pilot episode was rated TV-MA for violence, making it the first broadcast television episode ever to receive that classification, notably airing the same year the TV ratings system was introduced.

Scheduled opposite ABC's Monday Night Football and NBC's Dateline Monday, the show struggled in the ratings, averaging 10.5 million viewers and finishing 74th for the season, which led CBS to cancel it in May 1998 despite mid-season retooling.

In his autobiography, Steven Bochco admitted personal issues limited his involvement in production, weakening scripts after the first few episodes; he later took more creative control and ratings began to stabilize, but CBS chairman Les Moonves cancelled the show anyway, a decision Bochco strongly disagreed with.

Bill Clark, a retired police officer who had worked as a technical advisor and writer on NYPD Blue, served as a supervising producer and regular writer on Brooklyn South.

Writers Doug Palau and Nicholas Wootton moved to Brooklyn South from Steven Bochco's other 1997–98 series Total Security, which was cancelled before its mid-season break, joining as regular writers for the second half of the season.
