Origins

The novel that inspired the series was partially based on the real crash of Afriqiyah Airways Flight 771 on May 12, 2010, in which all 103 passengers and crew died except a 9-year-old boy.

Apple TV+ greenlit a ten-episode season in February 2022, with the series developed by Jason Katims from Ann Napolitano's novel of the same name.

Colin O'Brien was cast in the title role of Edward, alongside Connie Britton and Taylor Schilling, who were announced to star early in the casting process.
