The series is an anthology adaptation created by David E. Kelley, based on Scott Turow's 1987 novel, which had previously been adapted into the 1990 film starring Harrison Ford and Brian Dennehy.

Apple TV+ ordered the series in February 2022 as an eight-episode miniseries, with David E. Kelley serving as creator and showrunner alongside executive producers Dustin Thomason, J. J. Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich, Ben Stephenson, and Matthew Tinker.

Jake Gyllenhaal entered negotiations to star and executive produce in December 2022 and was confirmed in the role by January 2023, alongside co-stars Ruth Negga, Bill Camp and Elizabeth Marvel.

Filming for the first season began in February 2023 in Pasadena, California.

The show was renewed for a second season on July 12, 2024, which will be based on the upcoming novel Dissection of a Murder by Jo Murray rather than a Turow work, reflecting the series' anthology format.

Filming for the second season began on December 18, 2025 in Los Angeles before moving to Boston, Massachusetts in April 2026, with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directing the first episode.

The first season premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival on June 9, 2024, before its Apple TV+ release on June 12, 2024.

The first season earned four acting nominations at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, for Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga, Bill Camp and Peter Sarsgaard, and holds a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
