With the search for Grey's replacement proving difficult, NBC cast Hillary Bailey Smith almost at the last minute, delaying the series premiere by a few weeks in fall 1994.

Hillary Bailey Smith kept playing her contract role of Nora Gannon on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live throughout the run of Something Wilder on rival network NBC, and returned to it full-time once the sitcom was canceled.

Rocker Alice Cooper made a guest appearance in the fourteenth episode, 'Hangin' With Mr. Cooper,' in which Gene unexpectedly finds himself cast in a TV appearance promoting Cooper's new hit single.

Marla Maples guest starred in the episode 'Love Native American Style' as a divorced mother who joins Gene on a children's camping trip.

After premiering on October 1, 1994, in a Saturday night slot, poor ratings led NBC to pull the show after only four episodes before relaunching it in December in a new Tuesday time slot.

Despite the schedule change, ratings remained weak, and NBC dropped the show again in March 1995, officially canceling it shortly after; one final episode aired on June 13, 1995, leaving three unaired episodes.
