Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Reception

The series was cancelled rather abruptly in October 2002 due to declining ratings, and while NBC initially planned to bring it back, those plans were scrapped when several cast members opted out of returning.

Casting

Melina Kanakaredes chose not to return for a potential continuation because she was far along in her second pregnancy and wanted to focus on her family as well as her run in the musical Cabaret.

Origins

The two-part hostage episode originally intended as a regular story arc was rewritten to serve as the series finale, adding Sydney's wedding and her move to Chicago so the show would have proper closure.

Casting

Jon Hamm appeared in a recurring role as Burt Ridley, a firefighter who dated Joanie after saving her from a kitchen fire, years before his breakout role in Mad Men.

Trivia

Each episode of the series cost $1.5 million to produce.

Music

In the US and Canada the theme song was a cover of the Beatles' 'In My Life' performed by Chantal Kreviazuk, while international broadcasts and the DVD release instead used 'You Make Me Home,' composed by Tim Truman and performed by Angelica Hayden.

Trivia

The DVD collection released in 2004 included a gag reel of outtakes and bloopers, an introduction by creator John Masius, and audio commentaries from cast members including Melina Kanakaredes, Paula Cale, and Mike Farrell.
