This anime adaptation of Johnston McCulley's Zorro novels was produced by Toho and Ashi Productions specifically for international broadcast, airing in various countries from around 1993 to 1997 before its Japanese premiere.

The series was first broadcast in Italy in 1994, two years before it aired in Japan in 1996.

Although the series consists of 52 episodes in total, only 46 of them were actually broadcast in Japan, with some episodes skipped.

Unlike the original novels and other adaptations where Diego Vega is depicted with dark hair and eyes typical of a Latino appearance, this anime version portrays him as blond-haired and blue-eyed.

The character Maccarey, Diego's college friend who aspires to be a novelist, is revealed to actually be Johnston McCulley himself, the real-life author who would go on to write the original 'Zorro' story based on Diego's exploits.

As of 2023, the series has never been released on home video or through streaming platforms in Japan.

Both the opening theme 'ZORRO' and the ending theme 'Chikai' (Oath) were composed by Hiromoto Tobisawa with lyrics by Satomi Arimori, and performed by singer Masaaki Endoh.
