The series is executive produced by and originally starred U.S. actress Alicia Silverstone, known for the teen comedy Clueless, who voiced the title character Sharon Spitz for the first two seasons before being replaced by Stacey DePass in season three.

Unlike most animated TV shows that are set in fictional cities, Braceface takes place in the real-life town of Elkford, British Columbia.

The main character's name, Sharon Spitz, is a play on words referencing 'sharing spit,' a euphemism for kissing.

The voice cast includes Michael Cera, who voices Sharon's younger brother Josh Spitz.

The show was produced by Canadian studio Nelvana together with Jade Animation in China, with additional pre-production work handled by Studio B Productions in Vancouver and Atomic Cartoons.

In 2004, the episode 'Ms. Spitz Goes to Warsch & Stone' won an award at the Environmental Media Awards.

Four episodes ('The Worst Date Ever. Period', 'Miami Vices', 'Whose Life Is It, Anyway?' and 'Grey Matters') were skipped during the show's Disney Channel airings due to their content, and half of season 2 along with all of season 3 never aired in the U.S. until being released on streaming services years later.

The opening theme music was notably shortened during the show's U.S. airings on Fox/ABC Family and Disney Channel, as well as during its original Canadian airings on Teletoon.
