Melrose Place

This 2009 series is a revival of the 1990s Fox show of the same name and the fifth series in the Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise, greenlit after The CW successfully relaunched that franchise with 90210 in 2008.

One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn was initially approached to run the project, then called 'Melrose Place 2.0,' and was in negotiations to write the pilot script before being replaced.

Smallville showrunners Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer were ultimately hired to develop and run the new series, and Academy Award winner Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) directed the pilot.

Heather Locklear initially passed on reprising her iconic role as Amanda Woodward, reportedly because there wasn't a way to bring her back that made sense, but she later joined the show starting in its tenth episode.

Several original 1990s cast members returned in guest or recurring roles, including Laura Leighton as Sydney Andrews, Thomas Calabro as Dr. Michael Mancini, Josie Bissett as Jane Mancini, and Daphne Zuniga as Jo Reynolds.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz's portrayal of the scheming Violet Foster was criticized by critics and fans, and she was reportedly disliked by her fellow cast members; she left the show along with Colin Egglesfield after the murder mystery storyline concluded, a decision driven by weak ratings.

The production filmed at real Los Angeles locations including skid row, Sunset Boulevard, the Cinerama Dome, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Malibu mansions, and the Hollywood Hills' so-called bird streets, aiming to reflect the city's life more broadly than the original series had.

Melrose Place was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter for about an hour on its debut night, though the series was ultimately cancelled after one season due to low ratings.
