Origins

The character of Captain N originated in Nintendo Power magazine, created by Nintendo staff member and editor Randy Studdard, who originally conceived him as 'Captain Nintendo,' a Nintendo employee able to temporarily bring video game characters and items to life to fight a rogue piece of programming called Mother Brain.

The show could not be titled 'Captain Nintendo' due to legal concerns tied to the Children's Television Act of 1990, which banned program-length commercials, even though the series was originally known during development as 'Captain Nintendo: The Game Master.'

The Valiant Comics adaptation took a more serious tone than the cartoon and dropped third-party licensed characters like Simon Belmont, Mega Man, Dr. Wright, the Count, and Dr. Wily, instead featuring Samus Aran as a recurring character and romantic rival to Lana for Kevin's affections, despite Samus never appearing in the TV series.

When asked why Samus Aran never appeared in the animated series despite being featured in the comic book, series writer Jeffrey Scott said he had never heard of her.

Reception

For home video release, cover versions of pop songs used in the original Season 1 broadcasts, such as Bob Seger's 'Shakedown' and Kenny Loggins' 'Danger Zone,' were replaced with an instrumental version of the 'Mega Move' song due to unresolved broadcast rights concerns, which also delayed the DVD set's release from its planned 2006 date to 2007.

Trivia

Season 3 was treated as part of a separate series because it shared a half-hour broadcast block with the Super Mario World cartoon, requiring copyright holders' permission for the episodes to be released together on DVD, and later Super Mario World episodes had to be released alone due to likeness rights issues involving Bo Jackson.
