Set in Chicago, the show follows the kid-friendly misadventures of two high-school friends who are always scheming and dreaming. Kenan, who works at a grocery store, constantly devises crazy plans to strike it rich, while orange-soda-loving buddy Kel is always dragged along for the ride despite his track record for messing things up.

Origins

Kenan & Kel was one of three spin-offs from the sketch show All That, where Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell had co-starred for several years.

Origins

Producers, including creator Kim Bass, noticed Thompson and Mitchell joking around on the set of All That and decided to package them together in their own series.

Filming

During a hiatus of All That, producers kept Thompson and Mitchell on to shoot the pilot episode of Kenan & Kel.

Filming

The first season, containing 14 episodes, was taped between April and August 9, 1996, in front of a studio audience at Nickelodeon Studios in Universal Studios Florida.

The first two seasons were taped at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios Florida, while the last two seasons were taped at the now-closed Nickelodeon on Sunset theater in Los Angeles.

Casting

Kenan & Kel was only Kel Mitchell's second professional acting job, having previously worked solely on All That and in amateur theater productions in Chicago.

Music

The show's theme song, 'Aw, Here It Goes,' is performed by rapper Coolio.

Reception

The series won the 'Favorite TV Show' award at the 1998 Kids' Choice Awards.

Trivia

In a December 3, 2022 Saturday Night Live sketch, Kenan Thompson spoofed the show as 'Kenan & Kelly' alongside guest host Keke Palmer, recreating the Rigby's grocery store set with Kel Mitchell also appearing.
