Two's Company

The series was created and entirely written by Bill MacIlwraith, who penned every single episode across its four series run.

The first and second series were not broadcast simultaneously nationwide in the UK, but from the third series onward it was given a primetime Sunday evening slot across all ITV stations.

The show was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Comedy in 1977, and received four BAFTA nominations in 1979, including Best Comedy, Best Graphics, and Best Light Entertainment Performance for both Elaine Stritch and Donald Sinden.

Stars Elaine Stritch and Donald Sinden performed the show's theme song themselves, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn and music by Denis King.

The animated opening credits depicted Stritch's character as a brassy American eagle and Sinden's character as a snooty British lion, reflecting their cultural rivalry.

After its UK success, the show was remade for American television in 1981 as The Two of Us, starring Peter Cook and Mimi Kennedy, but it proved less successful and was cancelled after one season.

Donald Sinden later revealed that Elaine Stritch's drinking caused problems during the production of the first series, though the two remained close friends afterward.

Stritch died in July 2014 at age 89, and Sinden, who said he was saddened by her death, died only two months later in September 2014 at age 90.
