The series originated from two separate pitches: Muppet performer Bill Barretta developed a pitch about Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem after a performance at the 2016 Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, while Adam F. Goldberg and Jeff Yorkes independently developed their own project about the band around the same time.

Yorkes initially pitched the Electric Mayhem project to Goldberg as a feature film, but Goldberg suggested developing it as a series instead, and the three creators eventually combined their ideas into a single show.

The creators were drawn to the Electric Mayhem specifically because their relative lack of popularity compared to other Muppet characters gave the writers more freedom, since 'people just know them enough' to allow creative liberties.

The decision to greenlight a series based on Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem was influenced by the success of a series of music videos featuring the band on the Muppets' YouTube channel.

Executive producer Kris Eber said the filmmakers approached the series like a five-hour-long feature film, and the show explores the Electric Mayhem's backstory, which had never been depicted in previous Muppet projects.

The series intentionally used a more grounded setting than typical Muppet productions, avoiding elements like talking fruit, with Goldberg aiming to portray the band as real, breathing entities existing in the real world.

Appearances by iconic characters such as Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy were considered during development but were discarded early on to keep the series focused on the Electric Mayhem.

During filming, on July 2, 2022, an accident occurred in which a crew truck crashed into a tree on the edge of a cliff near the Griffith Observatory.

The soundtrack, released alongside the series, featured original songs written by Linda Perry as well as cover versions of popular songs, and it became the first-ever Muppets album to top the Billboard Kid Albums chart.

Following the show's cancellation after one season, Goldberg revealed on social media that his plans for a broader 'Muppetverse,' similar to Marvel Studios and Star Wars, were still in development.
