The series is based on the novel of the same name by M. O. Walsh, and Apple TV+ greenlit a ten-episode adaptation in May 2021 with David West Read as showrunner.

Chris O'Dowd was cast to lead the series in December 2021, with Gabrielle Dennis, Damon Gupton, Josh Segarra and Sammy Fourlas cast as co-stars around the same time.

Djouliet Amara, Ally Maki and Crystal R. Fox joined the cast in February 2022, ahead of production.

Principal photography for season one took place in December 2021 in Georgia, with scenes shot in and around the Canton Theatre in Canton, Georgia.

Filming for season two began on January 23, 2023 and wrapped on May 2, 2023, taking place in Atlanta, Georgia.

The first season received a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 37 critic reviews, with an average score of 7.2/10, and a Metacritic score of 71/100 indicating generally favorable reviews.

The second season held an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 15 critic reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10.

Despite the positive critical reception for both seasons, Apple TV+ canceled the series on June 28, 2024, after two seasons.
