Curro Jiménez

The series was created by Uruguayan playwright Antonio Larreta and was based on 19th-century Andalusian bandit culture (bandolerismo), set mainly in the Serranía de Ronda.

The character Curro Jiménez was inspired by a real 19th-century bandit known as 'the barquero (boatman) of Cantillana', a man from Cantillana (Seville) who lost his boatman trade after legal disputes and became an outlaw.

The real-life bandit who inspired the show was shot dead by the Guardia Civil on November 2, 1849, after being betrayed and led to his hideout in the Serranía de Cazalla by one of his own companions.

A very young Isabel Pantoja appeared in the series, playing a singer at an inn who is courted by El Estudiante.

Painter and poet Manuel Viola, a Spanish Civil War veteran who had fought on the Republican side, appeared as a defiant potter in the episode 'La gran batalla de Andalucía'; he was one of the few non-main actors who kept his real voice instead of being dubbed.

The 40 episodes were shot on location across Andalusia, including the Serranía de Ronda, Doñana and Cabo de Gata.

As was standard practice in Spanish TV productions of the era, most secondary and occasional actors were dubbed by professional voice actors, while the main leads and some notable secondary actors used their own voices.

Although not recognized at the time, later critics reinterpreted the series—especially the episodes directed by Pilar Miró, Antonio Drove and Mario Camus—as a hymn to freedom and progressive values in light of Spain's political context during its broadcast.

A 1995 sequel series, 'Curro Jiménez: el regreso de una leyenda', was produced by Antena 3 and shot in Uruguay over 12 episodes, reuniting Sancho Gracia and Álvaro de Luna and adding Jorge Sanz as the bandit's son, though it failed to revive the original show's success.
