The series was greenlit by Apple TV+ in April 2022, with Noel Fielding announced to star as the highwayman Dick Turpin; production had already commenced by the time the series was officially announced.

Additional casting including Hugh Bonneville, Asim Chaudhry and Tamsin Greig was announced in August 2023.

The series was partly filmed at Ludlow Castle in Shropshire.

Episodes one to three were directed by Ben Palmer, while episodes four to six were directed by George Kane.

Episode one was written by show creators Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis and Stuart Lane together with Noel Fielding, while episodes two to six were written by Richard Naylor and Jon Brittain with Fielding.

A second season was renewed in July 2024 but was scrapped in January 2025 after Noel Fielding failed to return to set partway through production, when the season was reportedly already 75% completed; the production was ultimately deemed unsalvageable and cancelled.

According to Fielding's agent, his absence from the set that led to the cancellation was due to illness; the actor has not since revealed the source of the health issue, and it has not affected his work on other series.

Actors scheduled to appear in the cancelled second season included Jason Isaacs, Miranda Richardson, and Dawn French.

A final seventh episode, composed of material filmed prior to the show's cancellation, was released on 15 October 2025, well after the first season had concluded in March 2024.

The series received an 84% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 32 critic reviews, and a weighted average score of 70 out of 100 on Metacritic based on 14 critics, indicating generally favorable reviews.
