Only four episodes of Wonderfalls aired on Fox before it was canceled in April 2004 due to low ratings, and a fifth episode that had been advertised never actually aired.

The remaining nine unaired episodes finally reached television when the Canadian network VisionTV acquired all 13 episodes and began airing them in late 2004.

TV Guide later included Wonderfalls in its 2013 list of 60 shows that were 'Cancelled Too Soon'.

The series was created by Bryan Fuller and Todd Holland and executive produced in partnership with Tim Minear; it was originally scheduled to debut in fall 2003 but was delayed until March 2004.

Although set in Niagara Falls, New York, the show was actually filmed in Niagara Falls, Ontario and Toronto, Ontario, using Canadian locations to stand in for the American setting.

Several Canadian actors were cast in lead roles, including star Caroline Dhavernas.

An alternate version of the pilot episode 'Wax Lion' exists featuring Kerry Washington as Mahandra and Adam Scott as Aaron; both actors were later replaced because they could not commit to appearing in future episodes.

The network requested changes to the pilot, including adding a scene where a character announces he will marry his nurse (a scene the creators disliked) and a scene of Jaye throwing a quarter into a fountain to give an impetus for why the muses start talking to her.

After cancellation, a fan campaign with an accompanying website emerged to save the show, and cast and crew members visited the site to encourage the grassroots support.

Producers tried to get other networks, including The WB, to pick up the series, and some episodes were screened in Los Angeles theatres in summer 2004 to help build support for a revival.

Although the 13 produced episodes were meant to tell a standalone story, the creators had planned second and third seasons, including a storyline where Jaye's therapist would publish a book about her leading to her institutionalization with 'Joan of Arc Syndrome.'

The show's theme song, 'I Wonder Why the Wonderfalls,' was written by Andy Partridge, and two music videos were produced for it.

Recurring character Gretchen Speck-Horowitz, played by Chelan Simmons, later appeared in a 2013 episode of Bryan Fuller's TV series Hannibal.
