UPN executives approached rapper Eve about developing a television project after she performed her single "Gangsta Lovin'" at an event marking the channel's 2002 season premieres, hoping to replicate the success of fellow musician Brandy's sitcom Moesha.

The series was originally publicized under the working title The Opposite Sex, and Eve initially resisted the change to her own name, feeling the original title was stronger, but UPN executives insisted it would better attract her fans.

Bumper Robinson was originally cast to play J.T. but was replaced by Jason George for undisclosed reasons before the series aired.

The role of Donovan was recast during development, with original actor Eddie McClintock replaced by Sean Maguire.

Although the show was set in Miami, it was actually filmed at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood, using stock exterior shots of Miami for the opening credits and scene transitions.

Eve felt intimidated by the demands of preparing for and filming a sitcom, and hired two acting coaches, including Chip Fields, to help her improve her comedic timing during the first season.

Rapper Missy Elliott wrote and performed the show's theme song, produced by Soul Diggaz; Eve chose not to perform the theme song herself in order to distinguish her acting work from her music career.

Eve later admitted in a 2016 interview that she regretted not fully committing herself to her character, saying she was often out clubbing between filming and learning her lines during the show's early seasons.
