The series is based on Kang Full's 30-chapter webtoon of the same name, adapted into a 10-episode television series; the script tried to fill in the gaps left by the original work.

Director Kim Tae-gyun said he felt a certain affinity with Kang Full's worldview and was particularly drawn to The Witch because it combines a romance story with social issues like witch hunts and the stigma created by prejudice and hatred.

Unlike the webtoon, half of the episodes focus on the two leads and their surrounding relationships, and the story is told from the perspective of Dong-jin and Mi-jeong rather than from detective Joong-hyuk's viewpoint as in the original.

Park Jin-young and Roh Jeong-eui were reported to be in discussions for the lead roles on April 28, 2022, reuniting them 13 years after they previously worked together on KBS 2TV's Dream High 2.

Principal photography began in August 2022 and wrapped in March 2023, meaning the series was filmed nearly two years before it finally aired in February 2025.

The main set for the drama was built in Chuncheon, while part of the final episode was filmed in Hallstatt, Austria.

The Witch is the first Kang Full drama adaptation to be released on a channel other than Disney+, though unlike earlier adaptations Moving and The Light Shop, the original author did not directly participate in this 'independent' production after the rights were sold.

With a nationwide rating of 2.4% for its premiere, The Witch recorded the highest ratings of a drama premiere in Channel A's history, though the series finale rating of 2.6% was considered disappointing compared to the previous slot's drama, which had ended at 4.2%.
