Melissa Rauch, who plays lead character Abby Stone, actually initiated the project herself and served as executive producer through her production company After January Productions, alongside her husband Winston Rauch.

Melissa Rauch was not originally expected to act in the show; it was only reported in April 2021 that she would take on the leading role of Judge Abby Stone.

Ana Villafañe was originally cast in June 2021 as assistant district attorney Monica, but she left the series after shooting the original pilot, and the role was reimagined and recast with India de Beaufort as Olivia for a reshot second pilot.

Several actors from the original 1984-1992 series reprised their roles in the revival, including Marsha Warfield as bailiff Roz Russell, Brent Spiner and Annie O'Donnell as the Wheelers, and Ray Abruzzo, who had played Detective Tony Giuliano in the original show.

John Larroquette admitted feeling sad when he first walked onto the set of the revival because he realized he was one of the only cast members from the original run still living, but he later credited co-star and executive producer Melissa Rauch with helping him feel rejuvenated about the franchise.

Abby Stone's middle initial 'T' is revealed to stand for 'Torme,' a nod to singer Mel Tormé, who both her father Harry Stone and actor Harry Anderson (who played Harry in the original series) were big fans of.
