Rick and Morty: The Anime is the third series in the franchise, produced by Sola Entertainment and animated by Telecom Animation Film, set between the fifth and sixth seasons of the original American series.

Yōhei Tadano and Keisuke Chiba reprise their roles as Rick and Morty from the Japanese dub of the original series, but none of the English-language cast from the original show returned for the anime's English dub.

The project began as a series of short films, starting with the six-minute short 'Samurai & Shogun', which aired unannounced on Adult Swim's Toonami block on March 29, 2020, during a hiatus of the fourth season of Rick and Morty, before being uploaded to YouTube the next day.

The first short film, 'Samurai & Shogun', features a different animation and art style than the usual show and is heavily themed around anime, specifically referencing Lone Wolf & Cub.

A total of five short films were released between 2020 and 2021 before the full series was ordered, including 'Rick and Morty vs. Genocider', 'Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)', 'The Great Yokai Battle of Akihabara', and 'Samurai & Shogun Part 2'.

Adult Swim officially announced a 10-episode order for Rick and Morty: The Anime in May 2022, with Takashi Sano serving as writer and director.

The series premiered in English dub on Adult Swim on August 16, 2024, and in Japanese with English subtitles on the Toonami block two days later, with both versions produced by Sentai Studios.

The premiere episode drew 192,000 viewers, and the season received mixed reviews, holding a 50% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 5.8/10.
