The series was created by actress Shelley Duvall, who also served as executive producer and presenter, following the success of her first anthology series, Faerie Tale Theatre.

The show adapted various American-based folk tales and stories of bravery over its 9 episodes.

It aired from 1985 to 1987 on Showtime as well as the Disney Channel.

The series received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

It was followed by a four-part anthology series called Nightmare Classics.

Several episodes were released on VHS by CBS/Fox Video in the 1980s, and Lyrick Studios later issued a complete nine-video VHS series in 1998.

Koch Entertainment released the entire series on DVD in 2005, available both as individual discs and as a nine-disc box set, before E1 Entertainment reissued the complete series in a three-DVD set in 2009.
