Beyond Paradise is a spin-off of the long-running series Death in Paradise, commissioned by the BBC on 29 June 2022.

The show follows Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman after he leaves Saint Marie to be with Martha Lloyd, continuing a storyline from Death in Paradise.

Producers chose to develop the spin-off because Kris Marshall's character was one of the most popular detectives to have featured on Death in Paradise, and they believed audiences would want to know what happened to Humphrey and Martha.

Sally Bretton reprised her role as Martha Lloyd from Death in Paradise for the spin-off.

Zahra Ahmadi and Barbara Flynn had both previously appeared in Death in Paradise, but playing different characters than the ones they portray in Beyond Paradise.

Although the show is set in the fictional Devon coastal town of Shipton Abbott, it was actually filmed in the Cornish town of Looe, chosen for its thriving fishing community.

Producers deliberately set the fictional town slightly back from the coast to allow for the development of different storylines.

The University of Plymouth's Portland Square and Nancy Astor buildings were used as the filming location for the South West Police Headquarters.

Anne Lloyd's house, the houseboat, and the quay seen in the series are all located on the Pentillie Castle and Estate on the River Tamar, north of Plymouth.

The show features several crossover characters from Death in Paradise, including Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington), Catherine Bordey (Élizabeth Bourgine), and Detective Inspector Neville Parker (Ralf Little).

Critical reception was mixed: Michael Hogan of The Telegraph gave it four out of five stars, calling it 'superior to its mothership show,' while Jack Seale of The Guardian awarded the first episode only two out of five stars.
