The Veil was announced in August 2022 and marks the fourth series that writer Steven Knight has made in collaboration with FX Productions.

Elisabeth Moss was confirmed in the lead role in August 2022, with the rest of the main cast, including Josh Charles, Dali Benssalah and Yumna Marwan, joining in February 2023.

Elisabeth Moss stated that developing an authentic British accent and mastering the action and stunt choreography for her character was more challenging than any previous role she had taken on, and she began learning the accent several months before filming started.

Filming took place in Turkey (wrapping in March 2023), as well as in Paris and London, with a shoot in Kent, England in May 2023 that included Canterbury Cathedral as a location.

While filming a stunt in Istanbul, Elisabeth Moss fractured a vertebra in her spine.

Elisabeth Moss also serves as an executive producer on the series through her production company Love & Squalor.

The series received mixed reviews, holding a 54% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 52/100 on Metacritic, with critics praising Elisabeth Moss's performance while criticizing the storytelling.

Despite mixed critical reception, The Veil was commercially notable, ranking as the third most-streamed series in the U.S. during its premiere week according to JustWatch data.
