Uncle Samsik marks Song Kang-ho's debut as a lead actor in a television drama series.

The series was written and directed by Shin Yeon-shick, a filmmaker previously known for movies such as Rooftop Andante and The Russian Novel.

Several characters are based on real historical figures, including Choi Han-rim (based on general Lee Han-lim), Choi Min-gyu (based on Choi In-gyu), and Joo In-tae (based on politician Cho Bong-am).

The series depicts real historical events from South Korean history, including the fraudulent March 1960 presidential election and the subsequent April Revolution that forced President Syngman Rhee to resign after 12 years in power.

The drama was initially reported to be scheduled for release in the second half of 2023, but its broadcast was delayed until a final programming decision was made.

Uncle Samsik premiered worldwide on Disney+ and on Hulu in the United States, launching with a five-episode premiere on May 15, 2024, followed by two episodes per week until a three-part season finale on June 19, 2024.
