Netflix announces in September 2020 the development of the miniseries with the help of Ayrton Senna's family, his sister Viviane Senna Lalli declaring she wants to tell a story about the pilot little known to the general public.

Vicente Amorim is announced as director in August 2022, Gabriel Leone is confirmed in the title role in March 2023, and Kaya Scodelario joins the series in July 2023 to play a fictional character, journalist Laura Harrison.

Filming began in 2023 and took place in Brazil (notably in São Paulo and Angra dos Reis), as well as in Argentina, Uruguay and the United Kingdom.

A teaser released on April 30, 2024, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of Senna's death, showcases the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix, where the pilot crosses the finish line in first position with only one functional gear on his car.

The series was criticized on Brazilian social media for having devoted only three minutes to the relationship between Senna and his last girlfriend Adriane Galisteu, while the romance with Xuxa takes up almost an entire episode.

According to the newspaper Metrópoles, Senna's family initially wanted Adriane Galisteu not to be mentioned in the series, this disagreement having nearly caused the cancellation of the project before a compromise was found to represent her with reduced screen time.

After the controversy, Adriane Galisteu reacted on social media asserting that her relationship with Senna, lived during the last year and a half of the pilot's life, belonged to her as well and showed a different Ayrton from the usual image.
