Mike Judge began conceiving King of the Hill in early 1995 while still working on MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head, drawing the main characters and writing a pilot script for a series set in a fictional Texas town based on an amalgamation of Dallas suburbs like Garland and Richardson, where he had lived.
Because Fox was uncertain about the viability of Judge's grounded, reality-based animated comedy set in the American South, the network paired him with Greg Daniels, a veteran writer from The Simpsons, who rewrote the pilot and created key characters such as Luanne and Cotton that did not exist in Judge's original draft.
Judge and Daniels described the supporting characters in Judge's first draft as generic 'snaggle-toothed hillbillies,' and it was Daniels who reworked them, notably transforming Dale Gribble into a conspiracy theorist.
