Seth Rogen had long expressed interest in a Sausage Party sequel, explaining that the original film's ending was deliberately removed because it would have made an awkward opening for a follow-up where the food characters simply discover humans exist.

Rogen also mentioned wanting to make a live-action/animated hybrid film in the style of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, calling it one of his all-time favorite movies, though this idea was distinct from the actual series that was greenlit.

The series was officially ordered by Amazon on October 26, 2022, produced by Point Grey Pictures, Annapurna Television, and Sony Pictures Television, with original film co-writers Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir returning to develop and executive produce it through their company Shaffir.

Unlike the original 2016 film, which was animated by Nitrogen Studios, the television series' animation was instead handled by Bardel Entertainment and Stellar Creative Lab, with co-director Conrad Vernon returning as supervising director.

Many characters are comedic parodies of real celebrities and public figures, such as Julius (a tyrannical orange modeled on Donald Trump, his name a play on Orange Julius and Julius Caesar), Rutabaga Ginsberg (a nod to Ruth Bader Ginsburg), and Margarine Taylor Greene (a pun on Marjorie Taylor Greene).

Two characters, Kishka Hargitay and Christopher Bologna, are named as puns on Law & Order: SVU stars Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni, and the two food characters even serve together as enforcers within the show, mirroring their live-action namesakes' on-screen partnership.

General Owens, voiced by Andre Braugher in season 2, marks the final released acting performance of Braugher, who died in 2023 before the season premiered in 2025.

The series received mixed reviews, holding a 48% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 54/100 on Metacritic, with critics praising the voice acting, animation, score, and humor but divided over its political themes and critical of the writing and characters.
