Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

King-Ohger is the 47th entry in the Super Sentai franchise and the first to be set in a parallel world, using insects as the main motif with all five core heroes being 'kings'.

Origins

The show broadened its target age range even further than its predecessor Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, a shift driven by younger viewers 'graduating' from Sentai earlier due to the rise of YouTube, streaming, and mega-hit anime like Demon Slayer.

Casting

Protagonist Gira Hasty was originally conceived as a king, but the writers decided to first settle on his catchphrase before his personality, leading to the idea of a kind-hearted man who plays a villain in pretend games with children, which shaped his 'Evil King' persona of speaking arrogantly despite his gentle nature.

Casting

Actor Rikuto Sakai found Gira's wide open-hand pose 'too light' in Part 1, so for the Part 2 (2 years later) grown-up Gira, he incorporated Racules' dignified mannerisms and lowered his vocal tone to convey growth.

Casting

Yanma Gusta's design went through several changes: actor Watanabe originally proposed a wet, permed hairstyle evoking a reformed delinquent, but the staff wanted sharper edges, resulting in the shaved-side hairstyle; two years later the character was given a blonde pompadour and a short school-delinquent jacket instead of Watanabe's own quieter hairstyle suggestion, which was rejected by director Kamihoributi.

Casting

For Kaguragi Dybowski, the production held open auditions with no age restrictions; although they initially envisioned a cool younger man, casting director felt actor Yoshihisa was the perfect fit despite being older, deciding intuitively that he was 'the only one' for the role.

Filming

Racules actor Yano gained about 6 kilograms for Part 2 to maintain a physically imposing presence, since cutting his hair for the character's new look made him appear slimmer.

References

In a crossover story arc (episodes 32-33, 40), King-Ohger meets Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger characters, including a new character named Prince (real name Kiryu Daigoro), the son of Kyoryuger's Daigo and Amy, who transforms into King Kyoryu Red using a suit based on Kyoryu Red Carnival with swapped armor parts from Kuwagata Ohger.

References

The Extra add-on warrior Spider Kumonosu's white-and-gold color scheme was designed as a deliberate homage to Kiba Ranger, the additional warrior from Gosei Sentai Dairanger.

Effects

The villain Deznarak VIII's cape was originally built as a solid sculpted prop, but suit actor Seike said it was 'too heavy to move in,' so it was changed to cloth.

Effects

The Big Bad Dagdedo's design is based on the tardigrade (water bear), an organism famed for surviving extreme conditions like absolute zero; the giant humanoid body is actually a cockpit-like vessel piloted by a tiny tardigrade creature hidden in the head.

Reception

According to Bandai's financial reports, the show's domestic toy/hobby sales for the year matched the following year's Bakuage Sentai Bunbunjer at 5.4 billion yen, while Toei reported that the Blu-ray sales and the 'Final Live Tour' stage show both significantly surpassed the previous year's Donbrothers figures, with the Final Live Tour grossing about 160% of Donbrothers' tour and setting an all-time record for Sentai stage show revenue at the time.

Reception

In winter 2024, the franchise held its first-ever limited-time specialty pop-up shop dedicated to a single Sentai series, drawing over 30,000 visitors across four cities in Japan.
