The original idea for the series emerged shortly after the end of lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, when brothers Alberto and Laura Caballero finished filming the twelfth season of 'La que se avecina' and were unable to resume filming of the third season of 'El pueblo' due to travel restrictions between autonomous communities.

Unable to continue with other projects, the screenwriters took the opportunity to develop new ideas; co-screenwriter Araceli Álvarez de Sotomayor initially proposed a series starring women in their 40s, but the team ultimately decided to focus on the reaction of men to social changes.

It is the first production by the production company Contubernio (owned by the Caballero brothers) outside of Mediaset España Comunicación since the end of 'Aquí no hay quien viva', and it required permission from Mediaset, co-owner of Contubernio, to bring the series to Netflix.

The series was first announced in March 2022 and by July of that same year the filming of the first season had already been completed, and the cast was revealed.

After just a few weeks of its premiere in December 2022, the series was renewed for a second season, which finally premiered in February 2024.

Netflix has produced local adaptations of the series in France ('Super mâles', with Manu Payet, premiered in January 2025), Italy ('Maschi veri', with Maurizio Lastrico, premiered in May 2025), and has versions in production in the Netherlands and Germany.
