The Duncans a European-American family in Colorado is adjusting to the surprise birth of their fourth child, Charlie. When parents Amy and Bob return to work they put their latest addition in the care of her three older siblings, PJ, Teddy, and Gabe. Teens PJ and Teddy and tween brother Gabe are typical kids -- that is, until their mother has another baby. The arrival of their new sister completely upends the entire household. When their mother heads back to work after Charlie's birth, it's up to the kids and their dad to keep the home fires burning -- and to keep Charlie out of trouble as she learns to sit up, crawl, walk and run. Teddy, as the older sister, makes a personalized video diary for Charlie, in each episode adding a nugget of wisdom for her baby sibling.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The series was originally titled 'Oops' and then 'Love, Teddy' before being changed to 'Good Luck Charlie'; the change was made because 'Love, Teddy' felt too feminized and might exclude boy viewers.

Origins

The Duncan baby was originally named 'Daisy' during development, but producers changed it to the more masculine-sounding 'Charlie' to attract more boys to the show.

Origins

Creators Phil Baker and Drew Vaupen wanted to move away from Disney's typical shows about wizards or pop stars and instead create a realistic family sitcom inspired by the enduring popularity of reruns like Full House and George Lopez.

Origins

Unlike most previous Disney Channel series, Good Luck Charlie prominently features both parents, a deliberate choice to debunk what executives called the 'myth' that Disney shows never show the mother.

Casting

PJ's character was initially named 'Casey' before being changed.

Casting

Leigh-Allyn Baker, who plays mother Amy Duncan, was nine months pregnant at the time of her audition for the role.

Casting

Producers originally intended to cast identical twins as baby Charlie, as is common practice to allow longer shooting days and provide a backup, but they could not find a suitable pair and instead cast ten-month-old Mia Talerico for the role.

Casting

Disney Channel president Gary Marsh called casting infant Mia Talerico the biggest risk in creating the show, since a bad day for the baby could halt production and cost tens of thousands of dollars, though he praised her as 'the most obedient actor' he'd worked with.

Filming

The pilot episode, 'Study Date', was shot in February 2009 at Sunset Bronson Studios, the same location where Hannah Montana was taped.

Filming

Starting with season two, filming moved to Los Angeles Center Studios, the same studio where Shake It Up was taped, even though the series is set in Denver, Colorado.

Filming

The Duncan family's house exterior used throughout the show is actually a real house located in Pasadena, California.

Filming

Episodes were typically shot in front of a live studio audience on Friday nights following a week-long schedule of table reads and rehearsals, though some episodes deemed too complex were taped without an audience.

Reception

A season 4 episode titled 'Down a Tree' featured a married lesbian couple, making Good Luck Charlie the first Disney Channel series to do so; the episode drew support from GLAAD and celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Evan Rachel Wood, while the conservative group One Million Moms protested against it.

Reception

The series premiere drew 4.7 million viewers, making it the highest-rated Disney Channel Original Series premiere since The Suite Life on Deck in 2008.

Trivia

The episode 'Special Delivery' became the most-watched episode in the show's history, earning 7.48 million viewers, while 'The Unusual Suspects' was the least watched with 1.9 million viewers.
