The series is a sequel to the 2021 film Boiling Point, which was itself an expansion of a 2019 short film of the same name, both directed by Philip Barantini and starring Stephen Graham.

The BBC commissioned the series in October 2022, bringing back the same creative team from the film to continue the story.

The final script was developed through a collaborative approach that combined the original screenplay with improvisation from the cast.

Steven Ogg joined the cast in February 2023, while most other principal actors such as Vinette Robinson, Hannah Walters, Ray Panthaki, Gary Lamont, Áine Rose Daly, Taz Skylar, Daniel Larkai, Stephen McMillan, Hannah Traylen, and Izuka Hoyle reprised their original roles from the film.

Missy Haysom, who had never acted before, was discovered through an open casting call and cast in the role of Kit.

Filming began in January 2023 in Manchester.

Unlike the original film, which was shot as a single continuous take in a real working kitchen, the series was filmed on a purpose-built set, which allowed for a wider variety of camera shots.

Although the episodes are not filmed in one continuous shot like the film, the production team deliberately retained some long takes as a nod to the original, including an eleven-minute opening scene in episode one.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds a 100% approval rating from 19 critics with an average score of 8.3/10.

The series received nominations for Best Limited Series at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards in March 2024, and for Best Drama Series plus Best Actress for Vinette Robinson at the 2024 Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.
