After foiling Cruella DeVil's plot to make a fur coat with the puppies' skins, the Dearly Family (Roger and Anita Dearly, Nanny, Pongo, Perdita, their 15 birth puppies and 84 adopted puppies) move to a new farm home in the country. Join Pongo and Perdy's pups, brave Lucky, tubby Rolly and Cadpig the runt, together with their chicken friend Spot, as they defend their new home from Cruella DeVil (Anita's boss and now new neighbor), continually get in and out of trouble, sneak into Grutely, and have all sorts of crazy adventures around the farm. Also along for the fun is Tripod, Patch, Two-Tone, Wizzer, Dipstick, Mooch, and the rest of their barnyard friends.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The series was announced in March 1996 as a partnership between Disney and Kellogg's, originally ordered for 52 episodes structured with two cartoons and one comedy bit in between each.

Origins

Creator Jim Jinkins, previously behind Doug and Allegra's Window, developed the show with his partner David Ray Campbell, alongside executive producers Bobs Gannaway and Tony Craig, who had previously supervised The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa TV series.

Origins

Producer Bobs Gannaway explained that since the original animated film and its live-action remake centered on the human characters, the team decided to shift the show's focus to the individual personalities of the puppies instead.

Origins

Gannaway found it daunting to expand Cruella de Vil into a greedier corporate criminal character for the series, since she was already a beloved Disney villain.

Casting

Early promotional material featured a dictatorial puppy named Penny and a mischievous puppy named Patch as main cast members, but the lineup was eventually narrowed down to three siblings—Lucky, Rolly, and Cadpig—so Penny was dropped entirely and Patch was demoted to an occasional character with a different personality than originally promoted.

Effects

The show's visual style used the thick-and-thin line drawing approach borrowed from Hanna-Barbera's 2 Stupid Dogs, a series that Gannaway and Craig had also previously worked on.

Filming

Unlike the original 1961 film and the 1996 live-action remake, both set in the 1950s, the animated series relocated the setting to 1990s England on the Dearly Farm.

Reception

The first season's ABC premiere, originally scheduled for September 6, 1997, was delayed by a week due to the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Trivia

The series was notable for being the first show to air on ABC's One Saturday Morning programming block.

Trivia

The show never received a full home media release; only the episode 'A Christmas Cruella' (with bonus episode 'Coup De Vil') came out on VHS in 1998, while the 3-part finale 'Dalmatian Vacation' was released on VHS and Laserdisc in Japan featuring two songs exclusive to that release.
