A Goofy Movie was commissioned by former Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, who suggested a storyline inspired by a planned car trip with his own daughter to the show's story supervisor Jymn Magon.

Jymn Magon proposed making a movie about teenagers, which led to the idea of centering the film on the relationship between Goofy and his son Max.

In June 1992, Buena Vista Television signed a massive $100 million promotional deal called 'Get Goofy' with Kellogg's, Burger King, Pacific Theatres, and another retailer to market Goof Troop.

Kellogg's included figurine giveaways of Goof Troop characters in its cereals from July to September 1992, while Burger King and Pacific Theatres ran their own tie-in promotions.

Starting January 22, 1993, Pizza Hut offered a Kid's Pizza Pack meal featuring 'Goof Wear' premiums such as a T-shirt, a legionnaire cap, a wrist band, and shoelaces.

On September 10, 1992, Goof Troop tied Fox Kids's Batman: The Animated Series with a 4.3 Nielsen rating and actually beat it in seven of thirteen metered markets.

By April 5, 1993, Goof Troop reached a 9.1 Nielsen rating among children aged two to eleven, making it Disney's most popular show and the second-most-popular weekly children's show at the time.

Despite strong ratings, Disney announced in February 1993 that Goof Troop would not be renewed for a second season due to a failure of network license fees and rising production costs.

In the DuckTales reboot, Spoonerville—Goof Troop's setting—is mentioned as one of the locations where McDuck Enterprises conducts business, and Goofy later appears in his Goof Troop design in a season three episode alongside photos of Max and P.J.

In 2023, Disneyland's refurbished Mickey's Toontown added new photos inside Goofy's house depicting Goofy and Max, Pete's family, and Max with P.J. and Pistol, along with a height chart for Goofy and Max.
