The Upper Hand is a British television sitcom, produced by Central Independent Television and Columbia Pictures Television and broadcast by ITV from 1990 to 1996. The programme was adapted from the American sitcom Who's the Boss?. As in the former series, an affluent single woman, raising a son with the help of her mother, hires a housekeeper only to have a man apply for the job.

The Upper Hand was a faithful adaptation of the American sitcom Who's the Boss?, using the original scripts and a near-identical studio set typical of American sitcoms, right down to the sofa facing the audience and the swing door leading to the kitchen.

Casting

The role of Caroline's estranged husband Michael Wheatley was originally played by Nicky Henson before being recast with Neil McCaul.

The theme tune was composed by Debbie Wiseman, and a piano version titled 'Joe & Diana' was released in 2011 on her album Piano Stories.

The series ran for seven series and 94 episodes, broadcast on ITV from 1 May 1990 to 14 October 1996.

Reception

The show was first released on VHS in the UK through Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment in three volumes, and all seven series were later released on DVD in 2010 and 2011 via Network.
