Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The Hong Sisters initially began developing the drama project in 2019 with director Park Jun-hwa for tvN under the working title 'Is This Person Translatable?' (이 사람 통역이 되나요?).

Origins

The project later took the title 'Redemption of Salvation' (구원의 통역) and was planned to have foreign shooting in China, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Origins

After the project was cancelled, the Hong Sisters and director Park Jun-hwa shifted to working together on the tvN drama Alchemy of Souls.

Origins

The project was revived in 2023 under the Trii Studio label within Imaginus with new director Yoo Young-eun; the final title 'Is Love Translatable?' (이 사랑 통역 되나요?) was chosen to directly connect the main character's profession with the theme of decoding love.

Casting

The lead role was first offered to Son Suk-ku in April 2023, but the actor declined it in favour of the drama Nine Puzzles.

Casting

Discussions with Kim Seon-ho and Han So-hee began in July 2023, and Go Youn-jung joined the conversations in September 2023 to be part of the project.

Casting

Choi Woo-sung was recommended after the Hong Sisters appreciated his performance in My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, and after a ten-month process involving three meetings with director Yoo Young-eun and chemistry tests with Go and Lee, he won the role of Kim Yong-u.

Filming

Filming began in June 2024 and took place in South Korea, Japan, Canada and Italy; lead actors Go Youn-jung and Kim Seon-ho filmed in Kamakura and Enoshima (Japan) between June 24 and July 10, 2024.

Filming

The Canadian filming was carried out in Alberta under Sailor Films Inc. with a crew of 150 people; scenes were filmed in Calgary, the Canadian Rockies, Canmore, Banff National Park and the Alberta Badlands.

Filming

As the cast returned from filming the northern lights (aurora borealis) scene at Upper Kananaskis Lake, they reported seeing real northern lights on their way back to their accommodation and shared them on social media.

Filming

The Italian filming took place in November-December 2024 in the regions of Rome, Civita di Bagnoregio, Tuscany (Montalcino and Siena) and Umbria (Perugia); the Italian portion wrapped on December 10, 2024 at the Giunti Odeon bookstore-cinema in Florence.

Filming

All filming officially concluded on February 5, 2025; the drama, initially planned for 2025, had its premiere date postponed to January 16, 2026.

Reception

After the drama's broadcast, excessive tourism issues arose in Kamakura and Enoshima; local authorities installed multilingual signs in English, Korean and Japanese at a railway crossing featured in the filming due to complaints of unauthorized photography and overcrowding.

Reception

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung's YouTube channel released a video on January 29 parodying the drama's aesthetic by using 'Jamflix' in place of the logo and adapting the title as 'Can you feel this policy?'.
