The series was originally announced in August 2023 as a Channel 4 production executive produced by Caroline Leddy, Liz Lewin, and Jimmy Mulville for Hat Trick Productions, before moving to Netflix in March 2024.

The lead roles were cast on 1 July 2024 with Roisin Gallagher, Sinéad Keenan and Caoilfhionn Dunne, alongside younger counterparts played by Emma Canning, Emily Flain, Chara Aitken and Maria Laird.

Filming began in Belfast in July 2024 and also took place at the Harbourview Hotel (formerly Londonderry Arms) in Carnlough, County Antrim, County Louth, Saint John's Point in County Down, Mamore Gap and Inishowen in County Donegal, Dublin, and Malta.

Hat Trick Productions previously produced creator Lisa McGee's series Derry Girls, and several cast members overlap between the two shows, including Sinéad Keenan, Emmett J. Scanlan, Maria Laird, Peter Campion, Ardal O'Hanlon, Bronagh Gallagher and Saoirse-Monica Jackson.

The Derry Girls mural in Derry makes an appearance in a scene in episode 8, serving as a nod to McGee's earlier hit series.

The series holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 critic reviews, with the critics consensus praising it as 'another triumphantly funny and proudly Irish series' from Lisa McGee.

Metacritic gave the series a weighted average score of 79 out of 100 based on 13 critics, indicating 'generally favorable' reviews.
