The series is adapted from A A Dhand's Bradford-set crime novel series featuring the character Harry Virdee, which began in 2016 with the novel Streets of Darkness.

Although early reports in September 2023 suggested the debut novel Streets of Darkness was being adapted, later reports revealed it was actually the third novel, City of Sinners, that Dhand himself adapted for television.

Sacha Dhawan was originally cast in the lead role of Harry Virdee in August 2023, but he was replaced by Staz Nair in February 2024.

Filming began in February 2024 in Bradford, which was designated the 2025 UK City of Culture, and the series features various iconic landmarks from the city.

The show's title theme and score were composed by James Everingham and Hans Zimmer, featuring Indian composer Shashwat Sachdev.

Trainees from Screen Academy Bradford joined the scoring process to gain hands-on experience composing for screen.

The series premiere was held at St George's Hall in Bradford on 6 February 2025 with a red carpet event attended by Dhand, Nair, Kala, Bhai, and Ismail.

The Telegraph's Chris Bennison compared Staz Nair's portrayal of Virdee to 'Daniel Craig-era Bond' while praising Kulvinder Ghir's performance as Virdee's disapproving father as 'quietly impressive.'
