Netflix announced two separate Masters of the Universe projects in December 2019: an adult-oriented anime series serving as a direct sequel to the original 1983 show, and a separate CGI series aimed at children.

Kevin Smith officially announced Masters of the Universe: Revelation at the Power-Con convention in 2019, explaining he wanted to tell a story set in Eternia that resolved lingering plot threads from the original 1983-1985 series.

The series is designed as a direct continuation of the original 1983 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe series, deliberately ignoring the events of She-Ra: Princess of Power (1985-1987) and The New Adventures of He-Man (1990).

Meg Foster, who played Evil-Lyn in the 1987 live-action Masters of the Universe film, was cast to voice a different character, Motherboard, in Revolution, announced via a Mother's Day themed reveal.

Weeks before Revolution's release, Gates McFadden and John de Lancie joined the cast, with McFadden replacing Alicia Silverstone as the voice of Marlena and de Lancie voicing Granamyr.

Powerhouse Animation Studios, which provided animation services for the series, took inspiration from Japanese anime for its visual style.
